Beings that I was in the vicinity during our Piz Seteur stay a week ago, I decided to check out as many of the other Dolomite rifugios that I could. We re-visited Rifugio Salei for lunch that we had stayed in years ago. It turned out that the “Chalet Belvedere” at the top of the Belvedere chair lift is not the same as the “Rifugio Biata Belvedere”.
One delightful rifugio that quite surprised us was Rifugio Frederich August where we also stopped for a bite. We wish we had not come so soon after our big breakfast because it seems like possibly the best food on the Sellaronda (and it would have been good to sample more. Of course, there was the obligatory pasta (eg. “Beetroot gnocchi with Ladin sauce, pistachios, and crispy speck” and”Pappardella l’eicetti with Prcini mushrooms and truffle on walnut cream”_) and other familiar dishes, but its specialties in distinctive sushi and grilled meat (85 euro tomahawk steak from their very own Highland cows). And its wine list was equally as impressive (16 different types of grandes marques champagnes).
The only disappointment is that their signature Yaks which they raise we nowhere to be seen (the white out snow conditions at the time probably got even their furry bodies scampering for cover).
Reservations are highly recommended If you don’t want to ski in, then you can also book for dinner where they will pick you up and return you to your car by their snowcat (featured two days a week).
